Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Dunhuang & First Encounter with the Silk Road
Welcome to Dunhuang — the pearl of the Gobi Desert and a spiritual landmark on the ancient Silk Road.
Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by our staff and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, begin your cultural discovery with two iconic stops:
🔹 Dunhuang Bookstore – More than a bookstore, this artistic space blends traditional Dunhuang literature, paintings, cultural events, and a unique local café. It’s the perfect spot to ease into Dunhuang’s rhythm with a good book and coffee.
🔹 Dunhuang Museum – Walk through a time tunnel of Silk Road history, from Han Dynasty relics to Buddhist treasures. The museum architecture mimics the Great Wall and cave temples, giving you an immersive start to your journey.
Evening suggestion: visit the vibrant Shazhou Night Market for apricot tea, lamb skewers, and local souvenirs under starry skies.
Day 2 – Explore the Mogao Caves & Revive Ancient Art
Today, prepare for a spiritual and artistic highlight — the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
🔹 Start with two immersive films at the Mogao Digital Center: “A Thousand-Year Mogao” and “Dream of a Painted Chamber”
🔹 Enter hand-picked caves with expert guides from the Dunhuang Academy. Discover centuries of preserved Buddhist murals, sculptures, and architectural wonders.
🔹 Learn the secrets of pigments, symbolism, and the enduring beauty of faith through color.
🎨 Mural Copying Workshop
Recreate the ancient techniques yourself under the guidance of a professional artist. This hands-on session helps you connect with the artistry of monks who painted these walls over 1,000 years ago. You’ll leave with your own work — part study, part keepsake.
🎭 Evening Performance (choose one):
Encore Dunhuang – An immersive, walk-through historical drama that brings the Silk Road to life around you.
Melody of Dunhuang – A visually rich musical about an artist’s spiritual journey through Dunhuang.
Day 3 – Desert Wonders, Sand Art & Stargazing
Step into the desert — a world of sound, light, and ancient mystery.
🐫 Mingsha Sand Dunes & Crescent Lake
Ride camels across singing sand dunes, slide down golden slopes, and marvel at Crescent Lake — a miraculous spring nestled in the desert for over a thousand years.
🎨 Sand Art Experience
Visit a sand art exhibition and create your own colored sand bottle, capturing desert dreams in glass.
🌅 Sunset Desert BBQ & Bonfire Party
As the sun sets over the dunes, enjoy a desert banquet:
DIY hotpot, grilled lamb, seasonal fruit, and local snacks
Live performances, music, dancing, and laughter under open skies
Unlimited fun with dune slides, camel rides, and sand ATVs
Bonfire celebration and desert stargazing lecture — learn about ancient Chinese star charts and constellations
Day 4 – Ancient Caves, Silk Road Pass & Ritual Reenactment
Today’s focus is on frontier heritage and Buddhist art beyond the mainstream.
🕍 West Thousand-Buddha Caves – Lesser known but no less stunning than Mogao. These caves span dynasties from Northern Wei to Tang and hold rare murals not found anywhere else.
🏯 Yangguan Pass
One of the most symbolic points on the Silk Road. Reenact a full ancient border crossing ritual in Han costume:
Receive your own hand-written travel permit (通关文牒)
Walk through the “gate of farewell,” and sip symbolic wine
Recite poetry at the site of “No Old Friends Beyond Yangguan”
🎓 Learning & Experience Highlights:
Historical context of border checkpoints
Han-style farewell ceremony
The meaning behind Tang poetry at the frontier
Day 5 – The Harsh Frontier & Ghost City of Wind
An adventure deep into the desert’s raw beauty and historic resilience.
🧭 Yumenguan Pass
Explore this vital gate of the ancient Silk Road, known from the line:
“The spring wind never crosses Yumenguan.”
Optional shuttle to Han Great Wall ruins and Hechang City site
🎓 Cultural Activities:
Han-style clothing & etiquette performance
Ancient classroom rituals and calligraphy session
Han banquet reenactment with costumes and music
🌬️ Yadan National Geopark (Ghost City)
Wander through dramatic, wind-eroded landforms that resemble castles, animals, and temples. This otherworldly place has served as a filming location for Hero and other epic Chinese films.
Important Note: This region is remote and dry. Please prepare sunscreen, snacks, and water.
Day 6 – Future & Farewell: Solar Science & Departure
🔆 Dunhuang Solar Photovoltaic Expo Park
Explore China’s green energy frontier. Learn how sunlight powers homes and cities across the Gobi.
🔧 Try hands-on solar-powered device building — a fun way to understand renewable energy.
