China Entry Requirements and Visa Regulations
1. 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy
Starting from December 17, 2024, China has unified and extended its original 72-hour and 144-hour visa-free transit policies to 240 hours (10 days) for eligible international travelers.
Who is eligible: Citizens of 54 countries, including:
- Europe (40): Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Russia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Belarus, Norway
- Americas (6): United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile
- Oceania (2): Australia, New Zealand
- Asia (6): Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar
Basic requirements:
- Must hold a confirmed onward flight ticket to a third country or region (not returning to the country of departure)
- Passport must be valid for at least 3 months
- Stay must not exceed 240 hours (10 days)
- Entry permitted through 60 designated ports in 24 provinces across China
- Permitted for purposes such as tourism, business, and family visits (not valid for work, study, or journalistic activities)
- No visa application is needed in advance — apply on arrival at immigration
Note: Travelers with a history of visa denial or immigration violations may not be eligible.
2. 30-Day Visa-Free Entry Policy
Effective November 30, 2024, China offers temporary visa-free entry for citizens of select countries for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, and short-term exchanges.
Eligible countries include: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, and others
- Valid until December 31, 2025
- Visitors can stay in China for up to 30 days without a visa
- Must present proof of accommodation and travel plans upon entry
3. Standard Tourist Visa (Type L)
Travelers who are not eligible for visa-free entry or transit must apply for a Tourist Visa (L type) before arriving in China.
Application requirements:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Completed visa application form with a recent passport photo
- Proof of round-trip air tickets
- Hotel reservations in China or an official invitation letter

- Submit documents to the nearest Chinese embassy or visa center
- Some countries support online appointments and digital submissions
