China Tourist Visa 2026: L Visa Requirements and How to Apply

A China tourist visa (L visa) is for tourism in mainland China. First check whether a visa-free policy or an existing valid visa covers your trip. If you need an L visa, use the checklist for the Chinese embassy, consulate or visa centre that handles your application: documents and submission arrangements differ by location.

Last policy check: September 7, 2026. By Ning (宁), Tocntravel. The US and Belfast examples below show why a single worldwide document list can be misleading.

Do you need a China tourist visa in 2026?

Check your passport, travel dates, purpose, route and intended length of stay against our China visa-free entry guide. Unilateral visa waivers, bilateral agreements and transit policies have different conditions. A 30-day limit is not a rule for every traveler.

If your planned tourism is not covered by an applicable exemption or existing entry document, apply for an appropriate visa before traveling. Several visits do not automatically mean you need a multiple-entry L visa: eligible travelers can use the unilateral visa waiver repeatedly, provided each visit meets its conditions. See the Foreign Ministry’s visa-free FAQ.

Choose the category that matches your main purpose. L covers tourism; family visits or private affairs may require a Q or S category, depending on whom you visit and your circumstances. The official visa-category table distinguishes these purposes. If your trip combines them, ask the issuing office which category to select.

China L visa documents: check your application location

Open the current L visa checklist for your responsible office before making bookings or submitting a form. Start with these items, then add the documents your own checklist requests:

  • Passport: check remaining validity and blank pages. The US embassy requires more than six months of validity and at least two blank visa pages; Belfast lists at least six months and two blank pages.
  • Application and photo: complete the correct online form and follow its current photo specifications. Belfast requires a recent colour passport photo with a white background.
  • Residence and visa history: prepare proof of your address or lawful stay where required, together with previous Chinese visas or passports relevant to your application.
  • Additional personal documents: minors and former Chinese nationals may need extra records. Follow the local instructions for parental consent, birth certificates or nationality documents, as applicable.

Compare the US embassy document list and the Belfast visa centre L visa checklist. These examples do not replace the instructions for another application location.

Applying in the United States: booking documents are waived

For tourist visa applications made within the US, round-trip air bookings, hotel reservations, itineraries and invitation letters are no longer routine required documents. This simplification has applied since January 1, 2024. An officer may still request additional material for an individual case. Source: US embassy L visa requirements.

Belfast example: travel bookings or an invitation

The Belfast checklist asks for round-trip flight bookings and hotel reservations covering the stay, or an invitation from a relevant entity or individual in China. An invitation must give the traveler’s details, visit dates and arrangements, and the host’s contact details and signature or stamp; supporting host identity or residence documents may also be required.

Use genuine documents that match your plans. If bookings are required, check cancellation terms before paying and confirm that the reservations meet your office’s requirements. A visa application does not guarantee approval.

How to apply for a China tourist visa

1. Find the office responsible for your application

Check the Chinese embassy or consulate’s consular district for where you live. Where a visa application centre handles ordinary visas, use the official visa centre directory and select your country and city. Confirm whether that location accepts your residence status before starting.

2. Complete the online form and upload documents

Use the application link provided by that office. For example, the US embassy directs applicants to the China Online Visa Application portal. Check every passport detail and upload against the originals before submitting. Keep the application number so you can check its progress.

3. Wait for the online review

Respond to any request for corrections or extra documents. In the US process, wait until the application shows “Passport to be submitted”, then print the barcoded application information page. An online review approval is not the final visa decision. The US embassy’s application guide explains these stages.

4. Submit your passport and collect the result

Follow your office’s instructions for the original passport, supporting originals and payment. Check appointment, representative and postal rules locally; they are not the same everywhere. After processing, collect or receive your passport through the approved method and check the visa immediately.

China tourist visa processing time and fees

The US embassy FAQ gives a standard processing time of four working days; its process guide makes clear that this begins when the passport is submitted. It does not include the earlier online review. Additional checks can take longer. Allow time for both stages and any passport return arrangements.

As a clearly labelled example, the US embassy’s current fee notice lists a regular L visa fee of US$140 for US citizens, with an additional US$25 for approved expedited service. The reduced fee schedule runs through December 31, 2026. Other nationalities and application locations have different rates.

Before paying, check the local fee schedule for consular fees, any visa centre service charge and optional delivery or expedited services. A private agent’s quote may include separate charges. Use the issuing office’s processing estimate rather than treating an agent’s promised date as an official guarantee.

Do L visa applicants need fingerprints in 2026?

Through December 31, 2026, fingerprint collection is waived for short-term visa applications allowing a stay of no more than 180 days, including qualifying L visa applications. See the official 2026 fingerprint exemption notice. This threshold describes the exemption; it does not grant every tourist a 180-day stay.

You must still follow passport-submission instructions, and an interview may be requested. The notice retains fingerprint requirements for the long-term categories D, J1, Q1, S1, X1 and Z. Recheck the policy if you apply after the stated expiry date.

Check validity, entries and the length of each stay

Read these three fields separately. The Foreign Ministry office’s explanation of visa fields distinguishes them:

  • Enter Before: the final date on which you can use the visa to enter, provided it still has an unused entry. It is not the number of days you may spend in China.
  • Entries: how many times you can enter during the visa’s validity. Once the permitted entries are used, that visa cannot cover another entry.
  • Duration of Each Stay: the maximum stay for each visit, counted from the day after entry. Follow the stay granted on your document and any instructions from the authorities.

For example, a visa valid for several years can still limit each visit to 60 days. Use the duration actually printed on your visa; do not assume that every L visa grants 30, 60 or 90 days.

Before travel, check your personal details, remaining entries and stay allowance. Admission remains subject to border inspection under Articles 24 and 25 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law. Keep your itinerary, accommodation address and onward travel details accessible.

After arrival, make sure your accommodation is registered. Hotels handle their guests’ registration; for a private home, you or your host must register within 24 hours of moving in. Our China accommodation registration guide explains the process.

Can you extend an L visa stay in China?

Apply to the local public security exit-entry administration at least seven days before your permitted stay expires. This deadline concerns your current stay, not the visa’s Enter Before date. Approval depends on your reasons and documents. Article 29 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law also limits cumulative extensions to the length of stay originally granted on the visa.

The NIA’s L visa extension instructions allow an extension of no more than 30 days and require a travel itinerary; group tourists also need a travel agency letter. Ask the local office for its full checklist, including accommodation-registration evidence. Do not build an itinerary around an extension you have not received.

China tourist visa: common questions

Can I complete the whole L visa application online?

Do not assume so. In the standard US process described above, the online review is followed by submission of the original passport. Follow the complete process published by your responsible office.

Must I buy flights before applying?

It depends on where you apply. Applications made in the US do not routinely require flight or hotel bookings. Belfast’s checklist asks for travel bookings or a qualifying invitation. Check your own office before spending money.

Can I use a valid Chinese visa in an old passport?

The US embassy FAQ says you can carry both the old and new passports if your name, gender, date of birth and nationality are unchanged and the travel purpose matches the visa. The visa must still be valid with an entry available. If personal details changed, apply again.

Does a multiple-entry visa let me stay longer on each visit?

No. Multiple entries allow repeat visits during the visa’s validity; the separate duration-of-stay field limits each visit. Check both fields before planning your route.

Can I work in China on an L visa?

An L visa does not authorize employment. Chinese law requires the relevant work authorization and residence status for employment; choose the correct process for your purpose.

What if I entered visa-free and now need more time?

This is different from extending an L visa. The Foreign Ministry says visa-free visitors with appropriate and sufficient reasons for a longer stay should apply to the public security exit-entry administration for a stay permit. Contact the authority before your allowed stay ends; approval is not automatic.

For these specific questions, see the US embassy FAQ on old passports and applications, Article 41 on employment (Chinese) and Foreign Ministry visa-free FAQ, question 11.
