Arrival: According to your flight or high-speed rail schedule, upon arrival in Taiyuan, your private guide and driver will be waiting for you at the airport or railway station with a welcome sign. After meeting you, they will escort you by private vehicle to your hotel in the city for check-in. Rest & Relaxation: No sightseeing is planned for today, giving you time to recover from the journey to Shanxi and settle into your hotel in comfort.
You may simply relax and enjoy views of the Fenhe River, while beginning to feel the calm pace and rich historical character of Taiyuan. If you wish, your private guide can recommend some local specialties for your first meal, or take you on a gentle walk so you can ease naturally into the city.

Afternoon: Yungang Grottoes Visit the Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Morning: Hanging Temple Start the day at the Hanging Temple, perched dramatically against the cliff. Looking up at this remarkable structure, you can clearly feel the beauty of its daring design, delicate balance, and technical skill. Later: Yingxian Wooden Pagoda Then continue to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, the tallest surviving ancient wooden pagoda in the world.
Built without a single nail, it has stood for centuries through wind and rain, showing the extraordinary wisdom of Liao-dynasty timber construction.
Afternoon: Huayan Temple This afternoon, visit Huayan Temple, one of Datong’s most important historic temple complexes. In its grand halls, you will feel the strength and scale of Liao-period architecture. Inside the Bojia Sutra Library Hall, beautifully made scripture cabinets and lively painted sculptures reflect the elegance and status of an imperial temple.

Morning: Wang Family Compound Travel by private vehicle to Lingshi and step into the Wang Family Compound, a grand residence often compared to a “folk Forbidden City.” Set against the hillside, its fortified courtyards connect one after another in an elegant and highly disciplined layout. The fine brick, wood, and stone carvings reveal not only craftsmanship, but also the taste, status, and way of life of Shanxi’s merchant elite.
Afternoon: Pingyao Ancient City In the afternoon, continue to Pingyao Ancient City. With its old walls, grey-tiled rooftops, and traditional streets still remarkably intact, the city offers a rare sense of continuity with China’s late imperial past. Walking here is less about rushing between sights and more about taking in the texture, atmosphere, and everyday beauty of a historic city that has endured for centuries.

Morning: Zhenguo Temple This morning, visit Zhenguo Temple and explore the remarkable Wanfo Hall. Built during the Five Dynasties period and never extensively rebuilt, it preserves a rare stage in the evolution of Chinese timber architecture. Its large bracket sets and precise mortise-and-tenon structure offer a vivid glimpse into the transition from the architectural traditions of the Sui and Tang to those of the Song dynasty.
Afternoon: Shuanglin Temple In the afternoon, continue to Shuanglin Temple, often regarded as one of the great treasures of Chinese painted sculpture. Inside halls such as the Hall of the Thousand Buddhas and the Bodhisattva Hall, you will encounter vividly expressive Ming-dynasty figures that seem almost alive. With more than two thousand finely crafted sculptures, the temple offers one of the most impressive experiences of religious art in Shanxi.

Morning: Guangsheng Temple Travel to Hongtong this morning to visit Guangsheng Temple and admire the famous Feihong Pagoda. Known for its graceful form and brilliantly glazed surface, it is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved glazed pagodas in China.
Afternoon: Xiaoxitian Later, continue to Xiaoxitian and enter the Main Hall, where thousands of suspended Buddhist figures create one of Shanxi’s most remarkable artistic interiors. The dense composition, extraordinary detail, and dramatic atmosphere make it unforgettable.

Morning: Hukou Waterfall Travel to Hukou Waterfall this morning and experience one of the most dramatic natural sights along the Yellow River. As the river suddenly narrows and rushes into the gorge, the sound, force, and movement of the water create an unforgettable scene. Standing near the falls, you can feel the raw energy of the river and understand why Hukou has long been regarded as one of the great natural landmarks of northern China.
If you wish, an optional helicopter ride can also be arranged for a wider view from above.
Afternoon: Yuhuang Temple Later, continue to Yuhuang Temple, an ancient temple best known for its extraordinary painted sculptures of the Twenty-Eight Mansions. Each figure is presented with a distinct facial expression, posture, and personality, turning a traditional religious subject into something vivid and deeply human. These sculptures are widely admired for their artistic quality and are considered among the finest surviving examples of traditional Chinese painted clay sculpture.
Visiting the temple offers a very different experience from the morning’s river landscape, adding another layer of cultural depth to the journey.

Because this is a private tailor-made journey, today’s schedule can be arranged flexibly around your flight or high-speed rail departure time, giving you a more relaxed and comfortable end to the trip.
