During the drive, your guide will introduce the city’s background and explain Xi’an’s role as the former capital of multiple dynasties and the departure point for Silk Road caravans heading west. After breakfast, depart the city center for a visit to the Terracotta Warriors, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. Walking through the excavation halls, you will see thousands of life-size soldiers, horses, and chariots arranged in battle formation. Your guide will explain how the figures were created, their original colors, and what they reveal about the power of China’s first emperor.
In the afternoon, return to Xi’an to visit the Ancient City Wall. As you walk along the broad stone ramparts, you will gain a clear sense of how the city was defended for centuries. For those interested, bicycle rental is available on site, allowing you to cycle part or all of the wall.
Later, explore the Muslim Quarter, a historic neighborhood where Islamic culture has flourished for nearly a thousand years. Walk through the lively streets filled with food stalls and small shops, and visit the Great Mosque, where traditional Chinese architecture blends with Islamic design.

Begin the day with a visit to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, built in AD 652 to store Buddhist scriptures and relics brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang after his long journey along the Silk Road. The pagoda remains one of Xi’an’s most important religious landmarks and symbolizes the transmission of Buddhism into China. On the way to the airport, stop at the Hanyangling Mausoleum, the burial site of a Western Han Dynasty emperor.
Unlike traditional above-ground tombs, this complex allows visitors to walk through underground exhibition halls, where terracotta figures representing soldiers, officials, and everyday citizens are displayed behind glass floors, offering a rare look into life more than 2,000 years ago. In the afternoon, take a domestic flight of approximately 2.5 hours to Jiayuguan. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and transfer to the hotel.
Accommodation: Jiayuguan
Hotel: Handpicked boutique hotel (Local 4-Star Standard or above)

Today focuses on Jiayuguan’s role as a frontier stronghold. Visit Jiayuguan Fortress, the westernmost pass of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. Walking through its gates and courtyards, you will learn how this fortress controlled Silk Road traffic and marked the boundary between imperial China and the vast western regions beyond.
Continue to the Overhanging Great Wall, built along a steep ridge overlooking the desert. Its dramatic position illustrates how geography was used as part of ancient defense systems. You will also visit the Wei and Jin Dynasty Tomb Murals, an underground complex of brick tombs decorated with scenes depicting daily life, ceremonies, and beliefs from more than 1,600 years ago.
In the afternoon, board a high-speed train to Dunhuang, crossing the Gobi Desert. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel.
Accommodation: Dunhuang

In the morning, visit the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Buddhist art complexes in the world. Inside selected caves, you will see murals and sculptures created over nearly a thousand years, illustrating the religious devotion and cultural exchanges that once flourished along the Silk Road. In the late afternoon, travel to Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring.
Walking on the sand dunes or riding a camel, you will experience the desert landscape that ancient caravans once crossed. As the light changes, the contrast between golden sand and the clear spring creates one of Dunhuang’s most iconic scenes.

Today you visit the remains of the Han Dynasty Great Wall, built from compacted earth and desert materials long before the stone walls of later dynasties. These ruins offer insight into early frontier defense strategies and the harsh conditions faced by soldiers stationed here. After sightseeing, transfer to the railway station and take a high-speed train to Turpan, entering Xinjiang’s oasis region.
Accommodation: Turpan
Hotel: Handpicked boutique hotel (Local 4-Star Standard or above)
Meals: Hotel breakfast included
Today’s journey takes you deep into the heart of the Turpan Basin, one of the lowest and hottest inhabited regions on Earth, where ancient civilizations developed remarkable ways to survive in an extreme desert environment. Your exploration begins at Jiaohe Ruins, the remains of a once-thriving earthen city built entirely from compacted loess on a natural plateau between two river valleys.
As you walk through its wide streets, temple foundations, residential quarters, and administrative areas, your guide will help you imagine daily life here over a thousand years ago — a Silk Road oasis city shaped by climate, trade, and faith. The site’s open layout and exposed structures offer a powerful sense of how urban life adapted to harsh natural conditions.
Next, you visit the Karez Underground Irrigation System, an extraordinary engineering achievement that made settlement in this arid land possible. These ancient underground channels carried snowmelt from the Tianshan Mountains across long distances to supply water to farms and villages without evaporation.
Standing beside the shafts and tunnels, you’ll gain a clear understanding of how generations of residents sustained agriculture and life in the desert long before modern technology. The journey continues to the Emin Minaret, the tallest ancient Islamic minaret in Xinjiang and a striking symbol of cultural exchange along the Silk Road.
Built in the 18th century, its elegant brickwork and geometric patterns reflect strong Central Asian and Islamic architectural influences. Your guide will explain how religion, trade, and local traditions blended in this region, shaping Turpan’s unique cultural identity. In the late afternoon, you pass by the dramatic Flaming Mountains, where layers of red sandstone stretch across the horizon.
Under the desert sun, the cliffs glow with intense color, creating the illusion of burning hills — a landscape immortalized in ancient legends and classical Chinese literature. This stark, otherworldly scenery offers a powerful contrast to the oasis settlements you explored earlier in the day.

Visit the Turpan Museum to learn about Silk Road trade routes, ethnic cultures, and archaeological discoveries from the region. Afterward, drive approximately three hours to Urumqi. In the afternoon, explore Erdaoqiao Market, a lively area filled with shops, food stalls, and mosques, offering a glimpse into Uyghur daily life and culture.

After breakfast, you will begin the day with a visit to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum, an essential stop for understanding the historical depth of the Silk Road. The museum focuses on the civilizations that once flourished across Xinjiang, presenting archaeological discoveries that reveal how different cultures, beliefs, and ethnic groups interacted along this ancient trade corridor.
One of the museum’s most significant sections displays well-preserved archaeological remains unearthed from Silk Road sites across the region. These discoveries provide rare evidence of early human settlement and migration in Central Asia. With explanations from your guide, you will gain historical and scientific insight into how geography, climate, and cross-cultural exchange shaped life in this remote yet influential region of China.
After the museum visit, you will travel onward to Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), located deep within the Tianshan Mountain range. To preserve the lake’s fragile ecosystem, private vehicles are not permitted beyond the park entrance. Upon arrival, you will transfer to the official scenic shuttle bus, which brings visitors closer to the lakeside area.
Once there, you may explore the surroundings at your own pace. Sitting at an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters, Heavenly Lake is renowned for its dramatic alpine setting. The landscape combines a crystal-clear mountain lake with snow-capped ridges, glaciers, forests, wide grasslands, and elements of local ethnic culture, creating a setting that feels both peaceful and remote.
Visitors typically explore Heavenly Lake in one of three ways: walking along the lakeshore trails, taking a boat ride across the water, or riding a cable car to higher viewpoints overlooking the entire valley. If time permits, you may choose to experience more than one option. Boat cruises and cable car rides are optional activities and require an additional fee.
Your guide will assist with timing and arrangements based on your interests.

Stop at a local tea house to rest and observe daily activity.

Today you travel deep into the heart of the Pamir Plateau to visit the legendary Karakul Lake, a journey widely regarded as one of the most breathtaking routes in western China. Along the way, the landscape unfolds in dramatic layers — stark snow-capped peaks, vast empty plains, sweeping alpine grasslands, untouched glaciers, and scattered quiet villages that seem frozen in time.
The raw scale and solitude of the Pamirs make this drive an experience in itself. En route, you will stop at White Sand Lake, a serene high-altitude lake set beneath towering snow mountains. Its still waters, pale sand dunes, and wide-open surroundings create a striking contrast of textures and colors, offering a peaceful pause before continuing deeper into the plateau.
You will arrive at Karakul Lake around midday. After lunch, take time to fully absorb the extraordinary scenery surrounding the lake. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 3,600 meters, Karakul Lake is considered one of the most beautiful high-mountain lakes in Central Asia.
The deep blue water reflects the surrounding snow peaks and glaciers, creating ever-changing views as light and clouds shift across the sky. You may stroll slowly along the lakeshore, enjoy the silence of the plateau, and photograph the dramatic natural setting at your own pace. There is no rush here — the vastness of the landscape invites quiet observation and reflection.
Later in the afternoon, you return to Kashgar along the same route. Upon arrival, enjoy a restful evening in the city and take time to recover after a full day immersed in the high-altitude scenery of the Pamirs.
Access to the planned border-area route must be confirmed for your nationality, travel documents and travel dates. Any required permits, restrictions and handling arrangements will be checked before booking. The excursion remains subject to local access rules and road conditions.

After breakfast, spend the morning exploring Kashgar’s vibrant local bazaars, where daily life unfolds in a lively and colorful way. The streets are busy and energetic, filled with vendors, shoppers, and the sounds of bargaining. Although the atmosphere may seem chaotic at first, the market has its own rhythm and character, making it one of the most fascinating experiences in the city.
Kashgar’s bazaars date back to the height of the ancient Silk Road, when merchants from Central Asia, Persia, and China gathered here to trade goods. Today, markets of different sizes are still scattered throughout the city and nearby towns, each specializing in different products.
You may find handmade crafts, local tea, wooden and metal tools, pottery, traditional hats, and many everyday items used by local families. Based on your interests and available time, you can visit one or several bazaars, with flexible arrangements discussed directly with your guide. If your visit falls on a Sunday, you may also choose to experience the famous Kashgar Livestock Market.
Held once a week, it draws farmers and herders from surrounding areas who bring sheep, camels, horses, cattle, and donkeys for trading. The market is crowded, dusty, and full of strong smells, but many travelers find it to be an unforgettable and authentic glimpse into traditional life in southern Xinjiang. After the visit, you will be transferred to the airport or railway station for your onward journey.
If you plan to exit China via an overland border crossing, a transfer to the designated border checkpoint can also be arranged.
