12-Day Northern Xinjiang Private Tour

Tour Code: TOCN-XJ-NORTH12D

What You’ll Experience on This 12-Day Northern Xinjiang Journey

Follow a summer route from Urumqi through the S21 desert corridor to Altay, Hemu and Kanas, then continue to Sayram Lake and the landscapes of Ili. Village stays and time around the Kanas river bays give the northern section depth, while two visits to Sayram Lake allow for different viewpoints and a more relaxed pace.

Further south, explore seasonal lavender fields, Xiata, Kurdening, Nalati and Tangbula’s Hundred-Mile Gallery. There is time for scenic stops, photography and rest, with the daily order adjusted around local conditions.

Ahe Highway, Yizhao Highway, Panlong Valley Road and Duku Highway are used only when officially open and suitable for travel. Weather or traffic controls may require route changes. Hemu and Kanas stays prioritize access to the scenic areas; facilities can be simpler than city hotels. Final accommodation, activities and services follow your confirmed itinerary.

12-Day Northern Xinjiang Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Urumqi

Arrive in Urumqi and give yourself a calm first evening before the long northern route begins. The city is wide, dry and bright in summer; even before you reach the mountains, it already feels like a gateway to a much larger landscape. After private pickup, check in, slow down, and let the journey start without forcing sightseeing into the arrival day.

The local team will reconfirm luggage space, the next morning’s departure time, weather, scenic-area entry notes and any current road-control updates for the S21 Desert Highway, Ahe Highway and later mountain sections. This briefing helps the following days run more smoothly on a long-distance private journey through Xinjiang.

Accommodation: Urumqi

Hotel: Atour-series local 4-star hotel

Meals: Not included on arrival day

Day 2 Urumqi - S21 Desert Highway - Kalamaili Sand Dune Park - Altay

Leaving Urumqi behind, the city gradually gives way to a drier, more open horizon. The drive along the S21 Desert Highway is more than simply a route to the next destination — it is the first real glimpse of the vast landscapes of northern Xinjiang. Long stretches of open road, pale desert tones, and distant landforms create a striking sense of space, with the city soon disappearing completely from view.

A stop at Kalamaili Sand Dune Park adds another dimension to the journey and gives you time to step out, explore, and take in the desert scenery before continuing toward Altay with your private guide and driver.

By late afternoon, the landscape begins to change noticeably as the desert gradually gives way to the Altay region. Tonight, you will stay at a comfortable hotel in Altay, allowing time to rest before the journey continues into the forests, grasslands, and scenic areas that define the next part of your Xinjiang adventure.

Accommodation: Altay

Hotel: Local 5-star standard in Altay

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 3 Altay - Ahe Highway - Ushilik - Tongba Forest - Tolehait Grassland - Hemu

This is the day the journey starts to feel alpine. If Ahe Highway is officially open, the approach adds a quieter mountain-road atmosphere before Hemu; if traffic control is in place, the route is adjusted without forcing an unsafe or closed road. Ushilik, Tongba Forest and Tolehait Grassland make the transition into Hemu gradual rather than sudden.

The scenery changes by layers: open grass, forest shade, village edges and the feeling of entering a remote valley. Hemu accommodation is chosen for location inside or near the scenic area, not for city-hotel polish, so expectations are clear. The value is being close enough to feel the village in the evening and again the next morning.

Accommodation: Hemu

Hotel: Hemu scenic-area accommodation

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 4 Hemu Morning Mist - Kanas Lake - Kanas

Spend a relaxed morning in Hemu, with time for village paths, river-valley views and wooden houses. Morning mist may appear over the village and surrounding slopes when weather conditions are right.

Later, continue toward Kanas Lake for mountain scenery, forested shores and time by the water. Stay in the Kanas scenic area to reduce transfers in and out. The accommodation is simpler than a city hotel, with the location chosen for convenient access to the lake.

Accommodation: Kanas

Hotel: Kanas scenic-area accommodation

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 5 Kanas Three Bays - Moon Bay Walk to Wolong Bay - Karamay

Today keeps Kanas at walking speed. The Three Bays are more than viewpoint stops: each bend changes the shape of the river, the color of the water and the way the forest frames the valley. The walk from Moon Bay toward Wolong Bay gives you time to experience the landscape at a slower pace instead of seeing it only from the viewpoints.

After the walk, the itinerary leaves the scenic area and continues toward Karamay. After two nights in mountain scenic-area accommodation, a city hotel provides a more comfortable overnight stop before continuing toward Sayram Lake and Ili.

Accommodation: Karamay

Hotel: Local 4-star hotel in Karamay

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 6 Karamay - N Cafe / Sayram Blue Afternoon Tea - Sayram Lake Scenic Drive - Sunset

The pace softens around Sayram Lake. When available, the day can include time at N Cafe, the Sayram Blue experience and nang-coffee afternoon tea, allowing the lake to become more than a quick photo stop. There is time to pause, feel the wind, watch the color of the water change and enjoy a slower afternoon after several long drives through Northern Xinjiang.

An extended scenic drive around Sayram Lake, Songshutou, selected lakeside viewpoints and sunset are planned around the weather and light. On a clear day, the lake can appear intensely blue against the surrounding grasslands and distant mountains; changing weather can give the landscape an entirely different atmosphere. Staying near the East Gate also makes it possible to return to Sayram Lake the following morning before continuing into Ili.

Accommodation: Sayram Lake East Gate

Hotel: Local 4-star hotel near Sayram Lake East Gate

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 7 Second Sayram Lake Visit - Guozigou Bridge - Lavender Fields - Yizhao Highway - Zhaosu

A second visit to Sayram Lake is intentional. Morning light, cloud movement and wind can make the lake feel very different from the previous afternoon, giving you another opportunity to experience the landscape before leaving the lake behind. Moon Bay, Santai Ancient Post and South Gate Songshutou can be arranged according to actual traffic conditions and scenic-area timing.

After leaving Sayram Lake, continue through the Guozigou mountain corridor, where Guozigou Bridge creates one of the most dramatic road-and-mountain views of the journey. Seasonal lavender fields can be included when they are in bloom.

If Yizhao Highway is officially open and conditions are suitable, continue toward Zhaosu along this scenic mountain road. If temporary traffic controls or weather make the road unavailable, the route will be adjusted accordingly.

Arrive in Zhaosu in the evening and stay close to the next day’s Xiata mountain section.

Accommodation: Zhaosu

Hotel: Local villa-style hotel in Zhaosu

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 8 Zhaosu - Xiata Ancient Trail - Muzart Glacier View - Tekes

Xiata gives the itinerary a wilder mountain character. The valley feels distinctly different from Kanas and Sayram Lake, bringing together riverbeds, open grassland, horses, forested slopes and glacier-backed peaks within one long mountain corridor. When visibility is good, the view toward Muzart Glacier becomes one of the defining landscapes of the day.

Because Xiata is particularly sensitive to mountain weather, the timing remains flexible to allow enough time for scenic-area transportation, the valley and your preferred walking pace. Glacier and mountain visibility cannot be guaranteed, so your guide will adjust the visit around the actual conditions as much as possible.

By evening, continue to Tekes, which provides a convenient overnight base before the journey moves into Kurdening and Nalati.

Accommodation: Tekes

Hotel: Local 4-star hotel in Tekes

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 9 Tekes - Kurdening - Nalati Cloud Pasture - Grassland Experience - Nalati Camp

From Tekes, the landscape turns greener and more layered. Kurdening feels more forested and enclosed than the broad grasslands elsewhere in Ili, with dense Tianshan spruce, mountain slopes, open meadows and cooler valley air. This contrast gives the day a genuine transition from forested mountain scenery toward the wider landscapes of Nalati.

Nalati Cloud Pasture brings a higher and more open perspective of the Ili grasslands. Depending on the season, weather and local operation, grassland experiences may include folk music, casual travel photography, archery, sheep interaction, naan making, pottery, grassland hotpot or a campfire. The exact activities available during your stay will be confirmed before departure.

Tonight, stay in the Nalati area surrounded by grassland and mountain scenery.

Accommodation: Nalati

Hotel: Grassland-view lodge or camp in Nalati

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 10 Nalati Sky Grassland - Valley Grassland - Panlong Valley Road - Tangbula

Spend the day experiencing Nalati from both the higher grasslands and the valley floor. Sky Grassland offers the broad, elevated views many travelers associate with Ili, while Valley Grassland feels softer and more pastoral, with forests, rivers and grazing land appearing at a closer scale. The value of the day lies in seeing how the landscape changes with elevation rather than rushing between sightseeing stops.

When officially open and road conditions are suitable, continue along Panlong Valley Road, where a winding mountain route passes through grassland and forest scenery. If temporary traffic controls or weather affect the road, the route can be adjusted while keeping the main Nalati and Tangbula experience intact.

Later, continue toward Tangbula for a quieter overnight stay before the long scenic return to Urumqi.

Accommodation: Tangbula

Hotel: Taoli Fengyue Manor, Tangbula Bee Town

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 11 Tangbula - Mengket Ancient Trail - Hundred-Mile Gallery - Northern Duku Highway - Urumqi

Today is one of the longer driving days of the journey, but the scenery continues throughout much of the return toward Urumqi. The Mengket Ancient Trail area and Tangbula Hundred-Mile Gallery bring together grasslands, rivers, forests and mountain valleys, allowing the final overland day to remain part of the travel experience rather than simply becoming a transfer day.

Continue toward the northern section of Duku Highway, which is used only when officially open and when current weather, traffic controls and vehicle restrictions allow. Because conditions on Duku Highway can change, the route is checked again close to departure and during the journey.

If the northern Duku Highway cannot be used, your guide and driver will follow the most suitable officially permitted alternative route back to Urumqi. The priority is to preserve safe and realistic travel timing rather than force a seasonal mountain road when conditions are unsuitable.

Arrive back in Urumqi in the evening and check into your hotel for a final night.

Accommodation: Urumqi

Hotel: Local 4-star hotel near the Grand Bazaar area

Meals: Hotel breakfast included

Day 12 Depart from Urumqi

The final morning is kept practical and unhurried. After a journey through desert highways, Altay forests, Hemu, Kanas, Sayram Lake and the grasslands and mountain valleys of Ili, there is no need to force additional sightseeing into the departure day.

Your private transfer to Urumqi airport or railway station will be arranged according to your actual departure schedule, with enough time allowed for luggage, city traffic and check-in.

If your flight or train departs later in the day, additional time in Urumqi can be arranged separately according to your interests and available time.

Accommodation: Not included after departure

Hotel: Not included after departure

Meals: Hotel breakfast included if available before departure

12-Day Northern Xinjiang Private Tour FAQs

This itinerary works best from late spring through early autumn, when the grasslands are green and most seasonal mountain roads are more likely to be open.

July and August usually offer the fullest summer scenery, while September brings cooler weather and the beginning of autumn colors in places such as Hemu and Kanas.

Road-opening dates, lavender blooms, morning mist and glacier visibility vary from year to year, so these seasonal features cannot be guaranteed for a specific date.

Northern Xinjiang is vast, so several days involve significant driving. The longer transfer days are part of the nature of traveling through this region rather than simple highway transfers, as many of the routes pass through desert, grassland, forest and mountain scenery.

Because this is a private journey, departure times, rest stops and photography breaks can be adjusted around your pace. Day 11, returning from Tangbula toward Urumqi, is usually one of the longest driving days of the itinerary.

These mountain roads are seasonal and may be temporarily closed because of snow, heavy rain, maintenance, traffic controls or other local conditions.

Our local team checks current road conditions before and during the journey. If a planned road is unavailable, your guide and driver will use the most suitable officially permitted alternative route while keeping the main destinations of the itinerary whenever possible.

For this reason, the exact road taken on a particular day may occasionally differ from the route shown on the website.

Hotel standards in remote scenic areas are different from those in major Chinese cities.

In Hemu and Kanas, we prioritize location so that you can stay inside or close to the scenic area and avoid unnecessary transfers in and out. Rooms are selected from the better available options, but facilities, breakfast and overall service may be simpler than at comparable 4-star or 5-star hotels in cities.

In places such as Nalati, Sayram Lake and Tangbula, some travelers also prefer scenic lodges or camps because of their surroundings rather than conventional city-hotel facilities. We will confirm the actual accommodation options before you book.

Most sightseeing can be enjoyed at a comfortable pace, but there are opportunities for light to moderate walking in Hemu, Kanas, Sayram Lake, Xiata, Kurdening and Nalati.

The Moon Bay to Wolong Bay section in Kanas and walking inside Xiata are among the more active parts of the journey, but both can be shortened according to your fitness level and preference.

If you prefer less walking, let us know before the trip and we can adjust the daily sightseeing pace accordingly.

Your main overland transportation is private, with your own professional driver and English-speaking guide.

However, several protected scenic areas in Xinjiang restrict private vehicles. In places such as Kanas, Hemu, Xiata and some other scenic areas, visitors may be required to use official scenic-area shuttle buses or local transfer vehicles for certain sections.

Your guide will handle the arrangements and timing, but these mandatory local transfers are part of the scenic-area operating system and cannot always be replaced by a private vehicle.
